You do not need a full SEO suite to pick topics. You need demand signals, intent clarity, and a willingness to ship pages that answer something specific. Ahrefs is useful; it is not the only map.
Start from what already works
Open Google Search Console → Performance. Sort by impressions, then by position 8–20 (almost ranking). Those queries are your cheapest wins: improve the page, tighten title/H1, add the missing section.
Export queries for your top landing pages. Cluster synonyms by hand. One cluster = one primary page, not twelve near-duplicates.
Mine the SERP without a crawler
Type a seed into Google and note autocomplete, People Also Ask, and related searches. Incognito helps. Record the exact phrasing people use — that often becomes your H2.
Scan the top results’ titles and table of contents. Your angle is the gap: newer data, a clearer checklist, a builder’s POV, or a tool workflow they ignore.
Forums beat volume guesses
Search Reddit, Indie Hackers, and niche Discords for “how do I…”, “best way to…”, and complaint threads. Pain language is keyword language. Volume tools miss half of it.
Prioritize questions you can answer from experience. Thin “ultimate guides” without screenshots or tradeoffs waste crawl budget.
Validate before you write 3,000 words
Check whether the SERP is dominated by brands you cannot out-authority yet. If so, go long-tail or comparison-shaped (“X vs Y for indie SaaS”).
Ship a tight page first. Expand after GSC shows impressions. Keyword research is a loop, not a one-time spreadsheet ritual.
Where SEOheist fits
Once you know the topic, you still need distribution. List free, share your /go link in communities discussing that problem, and earn coins toward dofollow — traffic first, attribute second. Research without publishing is just a hobby.
